What is Neodymium Magnets?

“Neodymium magnets” are no ordinary permanent magnets because these objects got a lot of stronger magnetic force in terms of pulling or attracting metallic objects.

There are actually many technologies today that utilizes magnets and there is a huge improvement of them when Neodymium got discovered and introduced.

Among these technologies that benefited the most are the Electronic motors and generators.

Speaking about motors, the General Motors and Sumitomo Special Metals were the companies who first developed Neodymium magnets back in 1982.

Later, the Chinese manufacturers dominated the market production due to their abundant source of materials being used.

Some sources will describe Neodymium magnets as “rare-earth magnets” it’s because this material belong to the family of rare-earth elements.

Although, the word “rare” can give confusion to some individuals. It does not actually mean that this material are scarce.

In fact, Neodymium are commonly encountered on the earth’s crust. Some sources claims that they are twice common as lead and about half as the copper.

Despite the powerful magnetic force of a Neodymium magnet, they are prone to corrosion which could lead to several reasons of degradation.

You might be surprised to know that “Permanent Magnet” is a wrong term for magnets because according to some expert, all magnets losses their magnetism at a rate of about 5 percent for every 100 years

Gladly, companies have now found various methods on how to prevent corrosion and degradation which preserves their magnetism close enough to be termed as permanent magnets.

Aside from strong magnetic attributes of Neodymium magnets, they also have very high resistance against “demagnetization”

In case that you do not know, demagnetization means that the magnet permanently losses its ability to attract metal objects.

Regular magnets can be easily demagnetized by applying an electrical field or an electromagnet.

Who was the Person who Discovered Neodymium?

Historical record claims that the person behind the discovery of the Neodymium element was an Australian chemist, “Carl Auer von Welsbach”, he discovered it back in 1885.

Although, many skeptics had an argumentation whether to consider it as “unique metal or not”

Anyway, it really didn’t took long enough where it finally get its own rightful spot as a recognized type of metal element.

Experts derived the term Neodymium from the Greek words, “neos didymos” which means, “new twin”.
